Skadar Lake Jeep tour!

The route of the Skadar Lake Jeep tour: PODGORICA – VIRPAZAR -SKADARSKA KRAJINA – ADA BOJANA – PODGORICA

Overview

Skadarska Krajina is a historical and geographical area in Montenegro stretching between the Rumija Mountain, Tarabos hill, Bojana River and Skadar Lake.

Krajina was first mentioned in the Chronicle of the Priest of Duklja (from the 12th century) as Craini, the place where the castle of Vladimir, the Prince of Duklja, was located, as well as the monastery of the Virgin Mary of Krajina.

This area located between Skadar Lake and Mountain Rumija is rich in picturesque monasteries and churches, desert islands and authentic villages. Numerous cultural and historical monuments, archaeological sites, medieval monastery complexes and fortifications testify that this area has been a significant cultural centre since ancient times.

As the legend has it, Ada Bojana appeared in 1858, at the mouth of Bojana River in the Adriatic Sea, at a place where the ship called Merito wrecked into the sea. Along with two nearby islands the shipwrecks were then retaining river sediment for years and created the beautiful island of Ada. It began to appear in 1882. Ada Bojana is one of the famous pearls Montenegro offer.

Ancient Wells in Ostros

Tour details:

Departure from Podgorica is early in the morning. We take the main road through Golubovci to Virpazar. From Virpazar, we continue along Skadar Lake, through the villages of Godinje and Seoca above Krnjice. A breathtaking view over Murici and the famous islands, where the medieval monasteries Starčevo Gorica and Beska are located, spreads from this part of the road.

The road across Krajina, between Virpazar and Ostros, is narrow, curvy and mostly steep, but offers spectacular views.

Following the steep and narrow road uphill, we pass through centuries-old chestnut forests and reach the Ancient Wells in Ostros (Boljevici Village), a true tourist attraction. There are twelve wells on a small plain surrounded by centuries-old chestnut trees, at the edge of the village, below a mild forest slope. It is uncertain when they were constructed and who built them. However, as legend tells, they are connected to the famous Ostros Royal Wells built by Prince Vladimir in 1001.

Then we continue our tour from Ostros to Vladimir and we descend to Vladimir across the Tarabos Pass. The view of Tarabos from the viewpoint of Stegvas, above Ostros, is remarkable. After visiting Vladimir we descend to Ulcinj from where we continue to Velika Plaza and along the hinterland of Velika Plaza to Ada Bojana.

Ada Bojana is said to be a place that pushes negative thoughts away. If you spend a few hours in this area, you will realize that the unusually quiet area has the power to transform and calm people. Ada has a mild Mediterranean climate with over 217 sunny days per year and the bathing season lasts from May to October.

We enjoy sunbathing and swimming at Ada Bojana until late afternoon (during the summer months). At the end of the tour, we return to Podgorica by the main road leading along the Montenegrin coast.
